Shellfish as a labeled allergen
In U.S. labeling, the required category is crustacean shellfish: shrimp, prawns, crab, lobster, crayfish. Mollusks such as clams, mussels, oysters, and scallops are not covered by the same requirement, though many notices list them anyway. Shellfish allergy commonly persists into adulthood.
Where it hides
Shellfish protein carries into seafood stocks and bisques, fish sauce and shrimp paste, surimi and imitation crab, some kimchi, Asian and Cajun seasoning blends, and glucosamine supplements derived from shell. Shared fryer oil in a kitchen is a frequent source of cross-contact that a package label cannot capture.
If you already bought a recalled product
Do not eat it and do not open it to check. Match the lot code, best-by date, and package size against the official notice — recalls usually cover specific production runs, not every unit of a product. Return it to the store for a refund or discard it sealed, and wash surfaces and utensils it touched, since trace shellfish is enough to matter for someone with the allergy. If you or someone in your household has already eaten it and has symptoms, treat it as you would any allergic reaction and seek medical care; call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling, or faintness.
