Sesame as a labeled allergen
Sesame became the ninth required allergen declaration in the United States under the FASTER Act, effective January 2023. Because the requirement is recent, sesame recalls often involve older labels, imported products, or suppliers that had not yet updated their declarations.
Where it hides
Sesame is in hummus and tahini, halva, falafel, many burger and bagel buns, breadsticks and crackers, za'atar and dukkah, some vegetarian burgers, and sesame oil used in dressings and marinades. It has historically also appeared on labels as benne, gingelly, sim sim, or simply within “spices” or “natural flavor.”
If you already bought a recalled product
Do not eat it and do not open it to check. Match the lot code, best-by date, and package size against the official notice — recalls usually cover specific production runs, not every unit of a product. Return it to the store for a refund or discard it sealed, and wash surfaces and utensils it touched, since trace sesame is enough to matter for someone with the allergy. If you or someone in your household has already eaten it and has symptoms, treat it as you would any allergic reaction and seek medical care; call 911 for trouble breathing, swelling, or faintness.
